Okay, tomorrow will be a food post, but I have to share good news. We adopted a dog, her name is Mardi (Gras) and she is freaking amazing. I’ve never had a dog before and now I am incredibly lucky because she is one good pup. Apparently in St. Catharines the group we adopted Mardi from, is really well known around here. The group is called BARK – Boudreaux’s Animal Rescue Krewe. They’re from Louisiana and they do AMAZING work. They drove up to Ontario with 100 dogs and I believe they had 20 left after being in the parking lot of a Petsmart for six days. When she was found, she was 15lbs and had so many ticks in her ear she couldn’t hear. She must have been someone’s pet because she already was fixed. It’s such a shame, but good for us. She is 40lbs now and we are making sure she has great food. Our plan is to wean her towards a vegan diet, but for now we have to stick to what she’s used to.
It’s amazing how much she has bonded with us and how much she trusts us. I suppose we give her every reason to. She has a great set up in her crate, nice bed, pillow, toys! We take her out for walks, hikes, and to the dog park (thankfully near by). In the car she’s a natural, she leans in withe the turns and sits nicely. She doesn’t stick her head out the window, which is nice and we found out she doesn’t like water. If the grass in the backyard is wet, she only walks on the stepping stones. Not once has she chased a squirrel or given us hard time tugging with a toy.
We’ve already taught her sit and down, we’re working on stay. Most likely we will have private lessons for training. For a dog that’s only 1 1/2 she acts much older. I suppose that’s from her time on the streets. She is incredibly meek and just darling. It melts my heart when she comes in for a cuddle and nudges my arms for a hug. Ooh, I love her.
The cats are adjusting, Yuki has already taken to her and has been bold enough to meet her nose to nose. Yoshi on the other hand, is a big pansy cat and prefers to watch her from a foot away. I suppose this is because he has never seen a dog before, but really, she’s so passive.
Either way – we have a new sweetheart in our lives and she will make things interesting come the winter when it’s blisteringly cold and she wants to go out.
Yes, I know Yoshi is fat, we have him on a diet. We alternate times for the cats to be out and her to be free, that way everyone has their own space etc. Soon enough we’ll be able to have Mardi in the same room all the time. She does enjoy her crate, she has her toys in there and she gets treats for being a good girl. Funny how a week ago I never saw this coming. Now, I’m incredibly surprised at how well it’s all coming together. For the girl who never had a mammal pet growing up this is a welcomed change. Yay Mardi!
