Air Eater on Holiday Late Summer Edition

By end of day today, or maybe if my boss is nice I’ll get to leave earlier, I will be on holiday! I cannot wait. Sept. 6th is our three year wedding anniversary and I’m so surprised how time flies. Seems like yesterday I was dress shopping. We’re going to Montreal for two nights and you can bet we’re going to be eating at Crudessence. It will be nice to see a few of our Montreal friends and enjoy what the city has to offer.

Of course I will be taking lots of pictures for a blog post afterwards. The nice thing about staying within Canada is no roaming charges, the bad part is, well not experiencing somewhere else. Hopefully if we close our eyes Old Montreal will lull us into thinking we’re somewhere in Europe. I think it can be done, there’s something very charming about Montreal and it’s hard to not feel like a romantic when everyone is speaking French. I somewhat feel odd being Mme. Le François with my Ontario accent, I usually let Mat do all the talking, but I am going to try. I find I can read and write much better than I can pronounce, but spelling something out doesn’t really help when dealing with a hardcore Francophone. I learnt this lesson years ago coming back from a skiing trip and stopping in a small town called St. Jovite, I managed to order in my broken French, but they gave me  a hard time. Funny how these little things stick with you.

Lucky for us our anniversary will always have a long weekend associated with it. Wish I could take you guys with me, but hopefully the post will be good enough.

See you soon!

Raw Stock 2012

This weekend we went to Raw Stock and had a great time. We saw quite a few vendors and the location of Niagara-on-the-lake was perfect. Along with vendors, there was a fenced in kid sand box/jungle gym area, a speaker seated area, free all day yoga and live musicians playing. There was a sense of calm and overall good feeling in the air. I would call the event very successful and I can only imagine what next year will be like.

The event seemed very well organized and pretty much ran itself. That’s what it seemed like, which I think is a great compliment to any large event, it all seemed very smooth and well thought out.

This is where most prepared raw foods were being sold. It was one large room with vendors along the side. It was incredibly busy during the lunch rush. The line up for food from the Naked Sprout and the raw pineapple juice/young Thai coconut water from Andria Barrett & Mary Hulbert was very popular.

Here’s Natalie from Rawlly Delicious talking to customer about nutrition.

Rawlly Delicious brought a variety of Energy Balls. If you’re in the GTA, they actually will deliver your order. That is amazing. Not only do they offer raw, vegan, gluten free food, but you don’t even have to lift a finger to get it. Click here to order. I’m going to write another post separately about my review of their Hulk Balls. It makes me giggle every time I say it, yes, I know my humour level is middle school. Continue reading

Gluten Free Veggie Patties

I moved to Scarborough when I was 12 and my new friends introduced me to patties. I ate my fair share of all the patty varieties and the other day I thought I should really veganize this childhood favourite. The trick of course is how do I make this gluten free on top of being vegan. I am not the best gluten free baker out there by any stretch, but I figured it really couldn’t be that hard.

Recipe testing! Frozen Cocoa Banana Pie with Crispy Peanut Butter Crust

The benefits of having a friend who is writing another cookbook is being a recipe tester. Mat and I volunteered to recipe test for Laurie Sadowski, author of The Allergy Free Cookbook Bakes Bread. Laurie’s second book will be dedicated to: pies, cakes, tarts and sweets.

As I can’t share the recipe, I’ll just tell you it was incredibly easy to make and required very little cooking, an easy pain free way of making a dessert. Bookmark Laurie’s site and get your hands on her book when it comes out. Your stomach/friends will thank you.

Here’s how it turned out:

Here’s the final product:

Needless to say, this was a fantastic recipe that I would highly suggest you try once the book comes out.

Keep in touch with Laurie:

Air Eater on a (mini) Holiday!

It’s a Civic Holiday here, also known as Simcoe Day, in Ontario and that means this is our long weekend for August. That pretty much means it’s a HOLIDAY and in true Madonna fashion, we’re all taking, just one day out of life to celebrate:

If we took a holiday
Took some time to celebrate
Just one day out of life
It would be, it would be so nice

Everybody spread the word
We’re gonna have a celebration
All across the world
In every nation
It’s time for the good times
Forget about the bad times, oh yeah
One day to come together
To release the pressure
We need a holiday

You can turn this world around
And bring back all of those happy days
Put your troubles down
It’s time to celebrate
Let love shine
And we will find
A way to come together
And make things better
We need a holiday

Holiday Celebrate
Holiday Celebrate

Holiday Celebrate
Holiday Celebrate

Holiday, Celebration
Come together in every nation

Be back tomorrow.

Handmade Cutlery Roll Up from moodyandsanguine

One thing I love about Twitter is the chance to discover some really cool people that I’d never be able to speak to due to geography or other reasons. Two such people that I’m glad I’m friends with happen to run an Etsy store called: moodyandsanguine. The two lovely ladies behind this venture are: Melina and Denise. They both live in Halifax and happen to be crafty vegans who hand make accessories and other items as you can see their categories:

Here’s a blurb from their store site: “Accessories are those little details in your life that make you smile whenever you see them. We want to be the place you shop every time you need a little cheer. We welcome the challenge of custom work. Do you have your own ideas that you need to see realized? Bring it on! Some jewelry pieces may need to be made to order for sizing purposes. If you have a tight time frame, please inquire and we will do our very best to accommodate.

Keep up with the exploits of Moody and Sanguine at, and be a Facebook fan at Or if you need a more regular fix follow @MoodySanguine on Twitter.

Every piece makes a statement. What’s yours?”

Mat and I ordered two Cutlery Roll Ups and mine looked like this:

I love my roll up and I get quite a few compliments on it. What I love most about it is the flap that comes down. Excellent to keep my inner crazy happy, I mean I need that flap to make me feel comfortable about my utensils being safely clean before use.

Great to support Canadian companies and heck it’s great to have something unique that works so well. Hope you find you item.

Product Review: Shiva’s Delight Lemon Rosemary Deodorant

For the past few years I have used a variety of deodorants: regular Secret, to Secret Clinical, to this one dab on deodorant that I had to buy in the States that had 20% aluminum. After realizing, hey, these are probably pretty bad for me I decided to try Kiss My Face roll on deodorant. Yeah, I can smell like lavender, but I still sweat like a hippy.

Cue the Lemon Rosemary Deodorant from Shiva’s Delight. I received this product and test tried it for a few days. Not only did I feel a bit dryer (even though it’s not an antiperspirant, but my pits smelt lovely! Yes, I am impressed.

What is this lovely stuff made of? Here’s a quote from the site:

Vegan Lemon Rosemary Deodorant $12 2.5oz

“This lovely deodorant is made with vegan candelilla flower wax and it smells wonderful! The active ingredients are Neem oil, tea tree and camphor.. together they help fight odor causing bacteria and they are antfungal! This product is aluminum free and is 100% natural.. You apply it in the morning then re apply it later in the day! It also makes mosquitoes very sad and some folks say it scares them away really well ;)”

Looks like we have a winner. Aluminum free, it works, and it smells great; bonus for being great bug repellant. It didn’t leave a film or cake onto my clothes, so I’m quite happy about that. I might even roll some of this onto my feet – why not?

There are other products as well: Natural Soap, Body OilsDecadent Bath Fizzies, Funky Jewellery, Natural Deodorant, Natural Baby Products.

I love supporting a fellow Canadian vegan business. Here’s where you can buy Shiva’s Delight products:

Hopefully as the business grows, so does the distribution, I would love to see these products on shelf at say, The Big Carrot.

Let’s make that happen by asking for it. Why not leave comments on The Big Carrot’s Facebook page? I know I will.
