Happy early Canada & US Independence Day + My Bday

Yay – FRIDAY! Hope everyone had a great week. For some reason I felt it dragged a bit, but I think that’s because I get that way before a long weekend. I have to say a big thank you to all of you guys. I really, really appreciate you reading my posts. I was going over my stats and I noticed that I’m bigger in the US than I am in Canada, I find that funny, but hey the US is great in my books. I’d move to Portland or San Fran in a second.

Here’s a big hug to all you fantastic readers. I hope you all have a fun filled long weekend. I know I will be enjoying myself, it’s my birthday the end of this lovely month and I plan on making a few pitchers of sangria to celebrate with friends. Ain’t no party like a vegan gluten free raw party! Haha. Ooh my. Here’s a picture I found of my favourite anime character who also shares my birthday. Kawaii desu yo!

Enjoy and have a good time!!

Cashew based Cream of Mushroom Soup

On my other Blog, Vegan Bloggers Unite!, I came across a recipe from one of the guest bloggers *Vegan Sparkes* that I had to try. I really enjoyed making this vegan cream of mushroom soup. The instructions were simple and the result was fantastic. I would recommend it to anyone who misses that creamy taste in a soup. I suppose there might be some kind of coconut cream or dairy alternative that would do the trick, but I have nothing against cashews, so why not.

Here’s the link to the recipe: http://wp.me/p1QAYC-eM

It’s hard to photograph something that looks kinda blob-ish, that’s not an excuse, but I wish I had a studio set up and not just the kitchen at work and my iphone.

Chocolate Cake made with the VEGG!

The very kind and generous Rocky, of the Vegg, sent me a sample of this wondrous product. What is the Vegg you ask? It’s the world’s first vegan egg yolk. Yes, you read that right. It is a light yellow powder and it smells EXACTLY like eggs. I was quite taken aback by that and really didn’t expect the likeness to be so real. In true Air Eater style, here’s the nutritional information:

As I had Bob’s Red Mill gluten free all purpose flour I used this recipe as a guide line and vegan-ized it. My substitutions are on the right.

  • 3/4 cup warm brewed Coffee < did not include
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar < cane sugar
  • 1/2 cup Cocoa powder, unsweetened
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 tsp Xanthan Gum
  • 3/4 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 cup Milk (cow, soy or rice) < almond milk
  • 1/3 cup Butter, Margarine or Shortening < Earth Balance
  • 1 large Egg < The Vegg 1/2 tsp with 1/8 cup of water blended by machine
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 1-1/2 cups GF All Purpose Baking Flour

Be mindful of the directions for the Vegg and use a blender as per the package directions. One detail I paid attention to and wanted to make note.

Here’s how it turned out for me: Continue reading

Diva Cup review

Oh ladies, (sorry guys) get ready for this! Dun, dun, duuuun: The Diva Cup! Yes I bought one, went through a cycle and have lived to talk about it. I bought mine directly from the LunaPad website as they had a sale off their kits:

This is what I bought from the site - DivaCup Kit with Teeny Pantyliners:

I picked the Apple Blossom pads. I couldn’t resist the name. I’m a sucker for a pretty pattern. Here’s what it looked like when it arrived:

Of course Yoshi couldn’t resist and had to see what I was doing.

I have to admit when I first attempted to use it, I wasn’t really sure how to do so, the ‘folding’ method worked best. I took it out about three times to empty it and hand wash gently with natural soap, no oil based soap, so that means my beloved olive oil soap is out. Please read the instructions in details as to the care instructions.

The DivaCup can be worn for up to 12 hours before emptying, washing and reinserting for use for another 12 hours. Perfect for overnight use. I was so paranoid the first day, but after I got used to trusting it and learning to listen for the “pop” suction noise I figured things out. It’s a great way to reduce feminine products from ending up in the landfill and finally something I can feel comfortable sleeping with and not having to worry about leaks or changing etc.

I love the Luna Pads as well. They fit my underwear and I was comfortable wearing them, I didn’t really need them too much, but the few little times I did, I was glad I had them. Comfy and breathable, I enjoyed having the Luna Pads for back up support. On the third day I went sans cup and the pads worked just fine. As per the packaging, they did shrink in the wash a bit, but they still felt fine afterwards.

I know a few ladies I spoke to on Twitter had negative experiences, the cup being too big, and the texture being too rigid, but I did not have these issues. To each their own and for me, this was a great positive experience, once I got past the anxiety and learnt to relax. I had no idea I would be so invested and interested in my period. I mean really, who sits there thinking yeah, this is happening, high five. More so that I felt really in tune with my body and I was really listening for once instead of just going on auto pilot.

I liked the experience, I’m happy with the products and I actually don’t mind my upcoming usage.

Do you use one?

Raw Vegan Festival – Summer 2012

The Raw Vegan festival held at 918 Bathurst was fantastic yet again. New vendors and such a fantastic vibe from everyone there.  I couldn’t take enough pictures. The problem was that I’d take a picture of the banner of the vendor, then spend way too long talking to the vendor to remember to take more pictures of the food.

Right by the top floor entrance was our friend from Live. We adore their food and their lovely products.

We stopped by the Upaya Naturals booth. Always full of a broad selection of health and super foods, Upaya has items you won’t find in your regular grocery store, run by two raw vegans who believe strongly in organic products to say the least. Have you tried Dandy Blend? I heard it’s a great coffee replacement.
We came across a vendor called Ausable River Soap Co., all the way from Lucan, Ontario.  We spoke to the owner Jaime, who explained how she hand crafts her soap items and makes everything in small batches. The only non-vegan item is the lip balm which has Beeswax. To the celiacs: If you’re going to order any soap, be mindful if it contains gluten (oatmeal) and double check ingredients.
Almost hidden away downstairs we came across Rawlly Rawlly Delicious, a husband and wife duo making raw, gluten free, vegan treats! Very nice to see a couple coordinate as such. When I asked Natalie why she started making such treats, her reply was to fool her child into eating healthy. Rawlly Rawlly Delicious uses a lot of healthy ingredients, so there’s no guilt involved, it’s a tasty way to get  your vitamins.
Here’s Derek, Natalie’s husband proudly working the booth.
Here’s the video clip he has playing when Natalie was invited to speak on television for CTV:

Back upstairs the venue was starting to get busy:
We visited the Health Nut booth. The lovely lady on the left, Mandi, is the creator and maker of Specialty Nut Butters & Raw Vegan Nut Cheese (Raw, Vegan and Organic). Where can you buy these wonderful hand made items? Why click here and find out!
At this point we were feeling hungry and had to go visit Nzyme downstairs. They do not have a physical restaurant, but they do catering and I regret eating too quickly as we forgot to take a picture.
Back downstairs we saw the Nud Fud table and the crowd started to really form at this point, so I took limited pictures. I wish I could show the bags of raw, vegan, gluten free snacks.
Here’s an idea of their product offering: Click to enlarge
Close by we visited with Chica Momma, a Caledon-based company that specializes in raw gourmet catering and education. Jessica, a high raw vegan mother of three created this business as a result of being captivated by raw food. Her lunch and learn program, “Give it to me raw!”, for the workplace teaches people how to incorporate raw food and explore the world of organic raw cuisine in 30 minutes. Not bad for a lunch break.
At this point there was barely any turning around room and we didn’t get to speak with the owner of 365 Deli, but had a chance to snag a quick picture:
There were so many other vendors, wish I had a chance to stop at each booth and take pictures properly, but the event was very busy and well attended. I plan on going to the winter one as well. Great show over all.
Honourable mentions:
Doug McNish was there with his beautiful wife Candice selling Doug’s new cook book. I have this book and I would HIGHLY recommend it. (I do not receive a penny for this statement) I find his recipes are simple, quick and tasty. That’s how I like things and clearly Doug and I are on the same page. I have to say his Nacho Cheese recipe has made a permanent home in my house.
Tonic Magazine: A great place for health information. From their website – “Tonic Toronto is the best health, wellness, nutrition and green lifestyle magazine in the city. Bought an Ice Cream Maker!

It’s Friday and I still haven’t posted from the Raw Vegan show. Uugh. Too busy! Running Vegan Bloggers Unite! and Concept Branding while also running this blog tends to keep me occupied. Good news, more posts will be coming though. We bought an Ice Cream Maker and we already tried it out. I think it worked out quite well in texture, but I really would like to work on the flavour.

This is what we bought:

I do declare this the summer of frozen treats. We also have an ice pop maker. Yes, we are going to turn our living room into an extended kitchen. Who needs a couch anyway? I love my kitchen gadgets, after all, I spend too much time in there as is might as well have the right equipment.

A few of my favourite things:
Dehydrator, Blendtec, spiralizer, juicer, mandolin, ice pop maker and now the ice cream maker. Cutting boards and good knives deserve an honourable mention.

Get your ice cream/pop on this summer!

Veggie Swiss Chard wrap with “cheese” sauce

During the summer I find I want food on the go and something light is usually best. I know my taste buds and that I heartily enjoy a good cashew cheese spread.

Sage Fair: Change Matt – Eco cloth diapers

One of the vendors we met at the Sage Fair was Sara Vartanian from Change Matt. She started her company as a result from having her own child, who is the face of their products, and wanted to have an eco friendly alternative to diapers piling up in a landfill. How adorable are these items?

Sara gives workshops on how to learn Cloth Diapering properly:

I imagine this is rather helpful for new mothers. What a great way to reduce garbage waste and have that bonding time.
